What Should I Do If My Cat Ate A Small Amount Of Onion?
My cat is listless today and has diarrhea. I think she may have eaten some onions from an onion roll I had been eating. What should I do?

Onions and other plants of the Allium family can cause illness in cats even in small amounts. Signs can be noted at 5 grams per kilogram of body weight. The onion causes damage to the red blood cells leading to anemia. Signs include weakness, vomiting, decreased mucous membrane color, and a change in the urine color.
If your cat ate any other unusual food this could be gastrointestinal upset due to dietary indiscretion.
Have your cat examined by a veterinarian--they will run blood tests to check the red blood cells and other important organs (liver and kidney especially).
