The most revered shrine for Sikhs, the Golden Temple is situated in Amritsar, a city in the north Indian state of Punjab. The temple is also called Harmandir Sahib or Darbar Sahib which literally means a place of Hari, the God.

A pool of Water called the Sarovar surrounds the temple and is known to be a pool that consists of the holy water. The temple has four entrances which have a special significance. They convey the idea of openness and acceptance to all. A person irrespective of caste and creed can visit the place if he or she is willing to follow some rules that are common to almost all religious places in the world like prohibition of alcohol, meat and cigarette. The most important rule is that everyone has to cover his head as a sign of respect and also has to wash his feet before entering into the premises.
