In a word - TRADE. The East India Company was formed to keep Britain supplied with its insatiable demand for tea, spices and other goods from the subcontinent. Eventually, the EIC became almost an offshoot of the British government with its own troops to keep the supply lines secure. This culminated in the British Raj whereby India became a dominion of the British Empire (The 'Jewel' in Queen Victoria's crown) and this survived until 1947 when India regained her independence, although she continues to be part of the British Commonwealth
