The title of the world's busiest airport has been hotly contested over the years, and it would appear that a number of airports have tried to appropriate this prized status. If one takes into consideration the total number of passengers, including those from both international and domestic flights, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, in the American state of Georgia, was the busiest in both 2005 and 2006.
In 2005, more than 88 million passengers either landed or departed from Hartsfield. In 2006, there were 976,307 takeoffs at the airport, serving more than 243 destinations. It should be noted, however, that the majority of the passengers arriving at Hartsfield use the airport in order to transfer to other flights, meaning that Atlanta is not the final destination for many travellers.
London's Heathrow Airport is also frequently touted in the media and elsewhere as being the busiest airline hub in the world. This is at least partially accurate, as in 2004 Heathrow was the busiest airport in terms of the number of international passengers.
