Which Is Better For Transporting My Child On My Bike, A Seat Or A Trailer?

Answer Question

    Pluses and minuses for each:

Seat:  Less weight and drag, but only good until child is about 20 kg (age ~5 in most cases).  Costs less than a trailer, easier to take on the train, less likely to get nicked if you have to lock the bike up somewhere. Can only transport one child at a time.  If child falls asleep, and you need to stop, have to be very careful about keeping bike upright.  Bike is very unstable with her in it.  Hard for parent to carry luggage, even a nappy bag (no room for rear panniers with rear seat, only front panniers with rear seat make bike unstable, backpack on parent gets in child's face except with front-seats).

Trailer: Hard work to pull (good if you want to get fit!).  Child is much more comfortable and protected from the elements.  Child can sleep better and stays asleep longer when she does go to sleep.  Gives you extra luggage space.  Tends to be safer in the event of an accident (you fall off, child watches in amusement).  Can transport one or 2 children together.
