    Ujung Pandang is a city which is situated at Celebes in  Indonesia. Its former name was Macassar. The Portuguese discovered the Macassar city in about the 16th century; in that time it was already a thriving port. During 1607 the city of Macassar was under the rule of the Dutch. They made a trading station in that area. In the year of 1667, the sultan was disposed finally and Ujung Pandang or the Macassar was under  foreign rule.

    In the year of 1848 the port of Macassar or Ujung Pandang was declared as a free port. It became the capital of the Dutch sponsored State of Indonesia Timur or East Indonesia in the year of 1946. The city of Macassar or Ujung Pandang was a very important city or port in aspect of Indonesian economy as well as Indonesian politics. When the Indonesia got their freedom from the Dutch rules, the Macassar or Ujung Pandang became the capital of the newly found Republic of Indonesia. It was the year of 1949. Hasanuddin University was established in the year of 1956 in the city of Ujung Pandang.

    According to the census report of the year of 1995, the estimated population of the city was 1,060,257. Today the city is very important in every aspect of Indonesia.
