Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Northampton Town Football Club was founded in 1897 after talks between the local schoolteachers and a football fanatic solicitor called AJ Darnell to start a town football team. They came together in the Princess Royal Inn pub and decided to form Northampton Football Club, but this was quickly changed to Northampton Town Football Club following criticism from the local rugby team of the same name.

Northampton started out in the Northants League, but moved onto the Midland League before joining the Southern League in 1901 which they subsequently became champions of in the 1908/09 season under the incredible guidance of their manager Herbert Chapman.

Northampton Town Football Club have played their home games at the ground of the Sixfields Stadium since 1994. It has a capacity for over 7,600 people. Previously, the club played for 97 years at the County Ground, which is home to Northamptonshire County Cricket Club.

The club currently resides in the League One division after being automatically promoted from League Two in the 2005/06 season when they finished in 2nd place.
