An old Irish folk song says, "Some say he's black/ But I say he's bonny/ And the finest of them all/ Is my handsome, winsome Johnny."
In Northern Ireland, "black" can also mean Protestant.
In Cromwell's Irish campaigns, thousands of peasants were departed to Barbados, where they were called Black Irish or Redlegs. Irish men married African slave women on the island of Montserrat, and the resulting Afro-Irish community is known as the Black Irish.
