How Can I Get Rid Of A Migraine Headache?

Answer Question

Migraine headaches are headaches that reoccur frequently. The pain of a migraine can range from mild to severe. Migraine headaces occur becuase of an electrochemical imblance in the cerebral area that causes successive constriction of the blood vessels followed by an expansion of the same blood vessels.  This constriction of vessels restricts blood supply to the brain which may explain the vision problems, slurred speech, sensitivity to light, tingling, numbess and other sensations normally experienced during the onset of a migraine. Ibuprofen or another NSAIDs is often prescribed by doctors for mild to moderate migraine pain. One natural pain reliever for a migraine headache is ginger. Drinking a mixture of ginger and water can reduce the migraine pain and reduce nausea.  However, it is suggested that patients with gallstones not take ginger. Other things that a person can do to help relieve the pain is apply cold compresses to the head, sit or lay down and limit activity and pain sensors such as light or noise.

While I've never seen this suggested, HEAT to my forehead, NOT COLD/ICE, has always help relieve the intense pain of my worst headaches. I microwave one of the buckwheat (or similar inner material) eye pads marketed for sinus pain, or even a wet microwaved washcloth enclosed in two sandwich-size ziplock bags will do (careful the heat source isn't applied while too hot!), & hold it to my forehead; it really helps. You might try this if you, like me, don't get relief from cold sources.  ~~  T. Burg
