How Do I Read Guitar Tabs?

Answer Question

First you look at the string that the note is going to be played. The number on string line corresponds with the fret number. Put your finger on the string and on the right fret and then pick till your hearts content.

The first basic step in reading guitar Tabs is to become aware of the difference between traditional sheet music and guitar tab. Guitar tab will have six lines instead of the five-line stave. Study the lines on the tab that correspond to the different guitar strings. Your low-E string will correspond to the bottom line on the guitar tab. You will find the A, D, G, B, and finally the high-E strings going up. Practice reading from left to right and examine the numbers on each line. These numbers indicate which fret (or note) is to be played on which string.

You have to play a chord when at the same point there's a number that is on more than just one line on the tab. Then practice strumming a string as an open string whilst a line in a chord is blank and has no number on it. You need to muffle a string if you see an X on its line. It would be best to train to read the rhythm at the end. In general, the closer together the numbers are, the faster will be the rhythm.

Guitar tabs are musical sheets that can help guitar players to learn the guitar on their own. It is a form of musical notation. The guitar Tablature is very different from the Guitar Staff Notation. The guitar tablature tells the player exactly where to place his fingers on the guitar or the fret board. Instead of showing the exact pitch and key, the guitar tab directly shows the guitar player the position of the note.

During the earlier years guitar tabs were written on paper and sheets. However with the advent of modern technology and computers there are now guitar tab software's available. These software's are Guitar Pro series, Powertab Editor, and Guitar Reader.  However a recent law was passed which made the distribution of guitar tabs illegal.

This is so old. I suspect it won't be read.. but have to add that the lines represent each string (six lines = six string guitar) the line at the bottom being the low "E" string (or lowest sounding pitch you can play on an open string) the top line being the high "E" string (E A D G B E are all six in order from bottom to top) the number on the line is which fret you play the note at. (EX: ------3------ would be the third fret .. if on the lowest string it would be the note "G") a zero would indicate a string played "open" meaning not fretted... (EX: -----0----- ) if the numbers are directly above an below each other they are to be played at the same time, if there are no numbers above or below a given number, it is played by itself ... hope that adds some clarity.

there are many sites present in which they teaches you how to play Guitar tabs, but know there is one software known as Guitar Pro, it will simply define you how to play your Guitar Tabs..
