Java is a computer programming language created by Sun Microsystems. At the time of its introduction, Java's distinctive attribute was its ability to run the same binary code on different kinds of computer and operating system. This was achieved by compiling the Java source code into bytecode, a special binary form which would then be interpreted by a Java Virtual Machine running on a particular system. Java Virtual Machines were created for most popular operating systems and incorporated into many web browsers.
In its early life, Java was primarily used on web pages to create so-called 'rich-client' applications, known as applets, whose code would be downloaded dynamically and executed on the client machine. In-built security features prevented the downloaded code from doing anything untoward.
Java was dogged by accusations of poor performance compared to other programming languages but it proved easy to learn, and became popular in educational circles because of its mature, object-oriented design, and its rich set of APIs.
Later, Java spread to many other spheres of computing and is now widely used in server side applications and in software for mobile phones.
