Adrian is a name for males. It is commonly used as a first name. it is also a name given to girls though not so commonly. It is pronounced as AY-dree-an. This name has originated from the Latin language and it means a man from hadria. Hadria is the name of a place in Italy and also another place named Hadrian's Wall which is located in northern England. There are two historical figures who beared the name of Adrian. One of them was a Roman Emperor in the 2nd century and the other was an archbishop.
The archbishop Adrian was born in Africa and became an abbot in the monastery at Nerida in Naples. He was offered to be the Archbishop of Canterbury in 664 but he refused and chose to travel to England with Saint Theodore for missionary work. Saint Adrian became the abbot of Saint Peter monastery and he died in the year 710. 9th of January every year is celebrated as Saint Adrian's feast day every year.
