No, your identity is your name passed down from generation to generation. I have watched the news and seen my last name come up over and over again on both sides of the law. So i would not think twice about it.

Never change your last name. It will look like you have AKA's and not seen well by many specially employers However you can do is use your other parents last name that would not be a  bad idea. Al Capone is from the 20/30's surely people have moved on a little, look in the telephone directory bet there are loads of capones, I can only presume that you are taking it too heart/thought about it yourself a little too much, and so possibly over conscious of it? And possibly if strangers (cashiers etc.) are making an kind of comment to you over it that they may just be using it as something to talk to you about, as a kind of ice breaker.
