Where Can I Find The Source Code Of A Web Site?

Answer Question

In your browser. The source code is a set of instructions for your browser, Internet Explorer, Firefox etc., about how to build the page. And if you think flat-pack furniture instructions are unfriendly, try the following.

Go to View in your browser's menu and select View Source. It may alternatively appear as View HTML depending on which browser and version you happen to be running. Selecting this option will open up a new window on your monitor, usually in Notepad for Windows users. What you will see is a long scrolly page containing a jumble of junk characters punctuated by the odd recognisable word. This is the retrieved computer code that's read by the browser to render a copy of the page you just clicked on.

Essentially, what you see is a list of off and on commands. For example, the tag means switch on bold now. This is later on switched off by the insertion within the code of the tag Obviously, this is a very simplified picture of how it works, but you get the idea.

A lot of sites are dynamic - so the HTML code that you see has been produced by other code (or scripts) on the website.  Those scripts may be reading from a database, interacting with other websites, etc, usually without your knowledge.

It's impossible to see the contents of those scripts without the website owner's permission.

If you are using Safari, you can look under the "View" bar above you and you will be able to see the icon "View Source"
