Have you accidentally switched it over to an external screen mode?
If you're getting a signal on another monitor when plugging it in, this is the most likely option.  On my Satellite the key combo to do it is Fn+F5 - pressing it toggles the mode on & off.  If yours is different, look on the function keys (top row) for a logo that has a little picture of a computer, then a slash, then a screen.
    Hope this helps.

Hi, I have the same problem, with an external monitor it works fine. But switching the output with Fn+F5 does not make the image return to the laptop monitor. I have tried all of the combinations. In my laptop monitor, I only get a dark growing square when I switch output with Fn+F5, but no image at all.

I also have a toshiba satellite laptop with the same problem.whenever i start a video convo in msn messenger it shows normal webcam viewing, but 5 seconds later the webcam viewing screen turns black. Its a built in webcam so its cables are fine but it just fails to show my webcam. There has been talk that the KLITE codec pac might be screwing with it or you need extra drivers but i cant seem to fix it. Now i have to buy an external webcam for a laptop that already has a webcam. Any last min help
