The Dnieper River flows through North-eastern Europe and is one of the important rivers in the region along with the Danube. The Dnieper flows through Russia, Belarus and Ukraine and is an important for navigational and economic purposes like generation of hydro electricity especially in Ukraine.

The river originates in the Valday Hills situated in Central Russia and flows for a length of 2,290 km (1,423 miles) before emptying in the Black Sea. The river finds mention in history from Greek and Roman times with several Slavic states being formed along its banks in later times. The river forms several reservoirs before flowing in to the Black Sea; these reservoirs situated in Ukraine are used to generate hydro electric power for the country.

The river is an important link in navigation routes like the Dnieper-Bug canal which connects the Baltic Sea water systems with those of the Black Sea. Some of the important cities situated on the banks of the river are Smolensk and Dorogobuzh in Russia, Cherkasy, Dnipropetrovsk and Kiev the capital of Ukraine and Mogilev and Rechytsa in Belarus.
