How Do They Make Kendal Mint Cake?

Answer Question

Kendal is situated in Cumbria in England and is well known as a centre for tourism.  It has earned the nickname "Auld Grey Town" due to its buildings that have been built with local grey limestone.

It is also famous for Kendal Mint Cake, discovered accidentally a confectioner in Kendal when he took his eye off what he was doing.

Sir Edmund Hilary and Sharpa Tenzing Norgay ate Kendal Mint Cake at the top of Everest , which of course increased its sales.

It is made by the confectionery manufacturer George Romney Ltd who can be found in Kendal.  They've been the manufacturers since 1936 and can produce a ton of mint cake in a day.

The mixture is simple – sugar, glucose and water.  Once this mixture has reached boiling point, it is then poured into copper pans.  This has to be done at just the right moment otherwise you end up with clear toffee.  That was the happy accident that discovered the formula all those years ago – stir the mixture too long and you get something completely different!
