In What Year Was The Football League Cup First Held?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The football league cup was first held in 1961 between Aston Villa and Rotherham United.  Initiially the competition was a two legged home and away affair, with Villa edging out their opponents 3-2 after extra time; Villa lost the first leg at Rotherham 2-0, reversing the deficit at Villa Park, winning 3-0.

The league cup stayed as a two legged affair until 1966-67 when the final was changed from a two legged game to a one off match at Wembley stadium.

Under this format Queens Park Rangers were the first winners, beating West Bromwich Albion by three goals to two.

Over the years the league cup has run under many different names, in the early 80s it was the Milk cup, switching to the Littlewoods trophy in '87, before changing again to the Rumbelows cup in the early 90s.  It was then the Coca - Cola cup, followed by the Worthington cup before changing to its current format as the Carling cup.
