The soft-coated wheaten terrier is an Irish breed of terrier originally bred to be a farm dog that could perform a variety of tasks, including guarding, herding and watching livestock and vermin hunting. They are versatile and hardy, but they do not have an aggressive temperament like other breeds of terriers. They are apparently related to the Kerry Blue terrier. In fact, the Kerry Blue terrier was originally a strange dog that had a blue/black coat that arrived in Kerry when a ship landed in Ireland and was bred along with the local breeds of terriers called the wheaten terriers.

An important characteristic of the soft-coated wheaten terrier is that this breed is a hypoallergenic breed of dog. In other words, the condition of a person who suffers from frequent allergic reactions can improve drastically if he or she keeps a soft-coated wheaten terrier as a pet. It is because this variety of terrier does not shed its fur as much as some other hirsute breeds of dogs do.
