Who Was The First Person To Reach The South Pole?

Answer Question

3 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

The first person to reach the South Pole was the Norwegian explorer, Roald Amundsen. He narrowly pipped at the post a British team led by Captain Robert Falcon Scott by a matter of a few days.

Unusually, rather than no-one remembering the runner up in a race, it was arguably Captain Scott who became the more famous. But this was mainly due to their ill-fated return journey back to base camp. The entire team including Captain Scott died before they could make it back to their support ship, Discovery.

Although Amundsen was Norwegian and a case could be made for that country having sovereignty, Antarctica is divided up internationally between several countries including the UK and the USA. Sovereignty of the massive frozen continent, a potential source of mineral reserves, was finally agreed in 1959 with the signing of an international treaty. The UK and USA have scientific research stations permanently staffed in the Antarctic.

I was! Ha, no just kidding. It was Roald Amundsen, although runner up Robert Falcon Scott became more famous than Mr. Amundsen
