An amendment refers to a change or several changes that are made to an existing bill or law. It can also refer to changes made in an agreement or contract between parties. A constitutional amendment refers to changes made in writing to an existing constitution. Amendments in a political sense are changes that are made in an existing law by the sanction of both upper and lower houses. Amendments are generally observed after the passage of time or when Government is controlled by parties belonging to ideologically different viewpoints. In the United States constitution the First Amendment guarantees the freedom of religion, assembly and press.

In contacts amendments require the sanction and approval of both the parties to a contract in order to be considered valid.
