When Did Ivan The Great Invade Tver?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Ivan the Great (1440-1505) was one of the most important Russian rulers in medieval times; Ivan was the Grand Duke of Muscovy during whose reign the boundaries of the state expanded considerably by way of conquests.

Ivan is rightly regarded as being one of the founders of the Russian Tsardom which took shape after his death. Ivan conquered several territories lying next to Muscovy a policy which was initiated by his predecessors; after annexing the rich and influential republic of Novgorod Ivan conquered several principalities as a part of his campaign to unify the Russian lands an objective of his which he pursued relentlessly styling himself as the Grand Duke of all the Russian lands.

Accordingly he conquered the principalities of Yaroslavl (1463), Rostow (1474) and finally Tver in September 1485. Ivan's first consort was Maria of Tver to whom he was betrothed in 1452. The principality of Tver was one of the important powers in medieval Russia and its conquest by Ivan significantly strengthened his standing in Russia.
