Is Cellophane Okay To Use Around My House?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

You might think so, especially as it is a ubiquitous product.  Commonly used to cover food, with a sticky back to tape things up, to cover clothes from the dry-cleaner...

But it's got a few nasty side effects.
Cellophane bags (such as from the dry-cleaner) are a choking hazard for small children. Even a roll of cellophane quite be quite a tempting toy for a young child who can peel the roll off and suck the plastic to their mouths.  Don't risk it, keep the roll in a locked cupboard.

Cellophane (that you cover food with) has chemicals called phthalates in it.  These are plastic softeners.  Phthalates have a cancer scare hanging over them, which makes you wonder if they really should be used to wrap food up with.  Phthalates disrupt hormones called endocrines (in high enough doses, in the lab)  which may lead to pre-cancerous changes.

It's thought that small particles from the cellophane may rain down on the foods they cover.  This is especially likely if the food is heated (such as in a microwave) with the cellophane wrap still on it.
