    A pdf (Portable Document Format), is used for two-dimensional documents. Pdf's consist of 2D vector graphics, texts, images and text.

    A pdf file can be used for a number of things, such as user manuals, application forms and other writing purposes.

    Pdf's can now include links. They can contain vector graphics for line illustrations and other shapes, and raster graphics for the use of photographs.

    Pdf's were created by Adobe Systems, and first came about in the early 1990s. It has progressed slowly, and there have ben seven versions in total.

    The three main technologies for a pdf file include a font embedding system that enables fonts to move with the documents when the document is scrolled; a storage system which compresses content into one file; PostScript programming language for layouts and graphics.
