What Do Phone Numbers Mean?

    Phone numbers are similar to the address of a home or the IP address of a website. When a person dials a number he or she is actually contacting that address. The length of telephone numbers can vary greatly depending on the country it belongs to. In the United States most telephone numbers follow the scheme of area code (first three digits), prefix (next three digits) and line number (last four digits). The first three numbers are the area code and are regulated by the Federal Communications Commission. The scheme of three-three-four numbers was adapted from the format followed by the AT&T Company in 1947. While calling other places in the world or foreign countries a double zero followed by the country code and city code has to be dialled as well
