The Daily Mirror was first published on November 2, 1903. The first publisher of this famous British daily tabloid newspaper was Alfred Harmsworth, who later came to be known as Lord Northcliffe. The Daily Mirror, which started off as a newspaper run by women, and whose original target readership also comprised mostly women. However after a year of its launch the paper failed to grab readership.

Lord Northcliffe decided that it was time to change the appearance of the newspaper into a tabloid. He advocated the judicious use of pictures and political stories that tended to have a right-wing leaning. The female journalists were fired and Hamilton Fyfe was appointed as the editor of the Daily Mirror in 1904 in an attempt to increase its circulation.

The circulation figures of the relaunched Daily Mirror shot up to 500, 000. In 1921, after Lord Northcliffe died and his brother Harold Harmsworth took over the ownership of the Mirror, the circulation figures of the newspaper doubled.
