It can be rather difficult to find work in the early stages, which means that you may need a small job to keep yourself going.

Creating a website is probably the best way to get yourself known. If you haven't got the skills, then perhaps find a site that that allows you to build a website, or you can pay a company to help you create one, though you may have to have quite  bit of money saved for this option.

One trick is to add a guestbook to your site and get people to leave feedback on your work. This will build you a reputation. Join a forum and give people a link to your site to receive more hits. Register your site with a search engine such as Google.

Not only will these options make publishers see that people think your art is worth considering, you may also find someone who visits your site might wish to commission you. Your website must give a good idea of your illustration style and be visually appealing.

If you don't wish to go down the website route then perhaps create some cards or leaflets that show examples of your work and send them to some magazines or newspapers. You are more likely to get your first commission from a magazine or newspaper than from a book publisher.
