How Was The Microwave Oven Invented?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The development of the microwave oven was initiated by a discovery that was made by Dr. Percy Spencer. Dr. Spencer was in the process of doing research related to radars. The discovery occurred around 1946. He was testing a magnetron when he made his discovery. During his tests, Dr. Spencer found that a candy bar that had been in his pocket had melted. This event grabbed the engineer's interest. He then decided to perform another experiment to study this phenomenon. In this experiment, he placed some popcorn kernels near the magnetron and waited to see what would happen. The popcorn kernels began to pop around the magnetron and inside his lab. It was at this moment that Dr. Spencer knew that he was on to something. This spawned more research in the usage of microwave energy in cooking food. This would eventually lead to the invention of the first microwave in 1947.
