Who Was S T Coleridge?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Samuel Taylor Colerdige (1772-1834) was an English Romantic poet who was also a playwright and philosopher.  He left Cambridge early to join the army, but did not enjoy the experience and relied on wealthy friends to rescue him from the army.
He first poems were published in 1794.  He then met the English poet Worsdworth with whom he published a joint volume of lyrical ballads.  This included Coleridge's most famous work 'The Rime of the Ancient Mariner'.  This epic poem is still taught in schools today.
His other works include the poem 'Kubla Khan' and 'Osirio'.
One of Coeridge's more philospohical ideas was to establish a community in America .  This was to be 'pantisocratic' where all would rule equally and be equal, but this never came to fruition.  He is also reputed to have been in love with and perhaps had an affair with Wordsworth's sister in law, Sara.
