It takes a few days for the goat’s milk (dam’s milk) to dry up after weaning. In fact weaning has to be a gradual process to avoid both stress and complications to the health of the dam. If the dam has more than one kid then one kid at a time should be weaned. The reason is that the udders of the goat will continue to produce milk and this milk will make the udders extremely tight by the next day. Care should be taken to see that the goat is milked manually to release the stress caused to her. An udder full of milk that remains unused increases the chances of mastitis developing. The entire process of weaning is also very stressful to both the kids and the dam. Once separated the two should be kept as far away as possible from each other to avoid them screaming/calling out back and forth.
