Has Anyone Ever Had A Dog With A Mental Disorder?

My English Bulldog bit my husband last week...it required 12 stitches. He was not provoked and had never indicated any threat before. He seems to wake up from a deep sleep and not recognize us, he growls like he is from the pits of hell. My husband put his hand on his back and he turned and "nipped" him with his big ole mouth. He immediately ran into the kitchen and seemed ashamed of himself. He is 4 years old and very healthy. He loves to run and play football and get up in our laps and sleep. Help.

Dogs can get mental health problems. One of my dogs got senile dementia and had to be put down.
We also had a family dog that bit without warning, and immediately acted ashamed and apologetic. Sorry to say she had to be put down, brain tumour was suspected.
If I were in your shoes I would have the dog given a thorough check-up, including test for epilepsy.

Thank you. I had read about senile dementia in older dogs but Moon is not that old. How old was your dog? I was actually concerned about a tumor as I had a Rottweiller once that had cancer and at the end did not really know us..never bit though, but growled like he was about to do so. I am sure Moon needs to go to the vet. I am concerned about the vets in our area just assuming that he is aggressive and that it could not be anything but behavior issues. He has never had that at home, but he has hated the vet after losing his Mother 2 years ago. When he went with her he was great. Actually, he has had personality changes since we lost her. He has been much better though. He seems to do this growly thing when he is very tired and been sleeping hard. I really do not know where to turn. Thank you for answering me.
