What Is Tsumeb In Namibia Best Known For?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Tsumeb is best known for its precious metal reserves – an amazing 200 different types of precious metal, almost all of which are deposited underground.

Tsumeb's wealth of natural resources has long been known about. Local folklore has it that the Khoi-khoi, Bergdama, Herero and Ovambo tribes of the area fought for possession of a magical mountain said to be rich in metal ores. If there is any truth in the legend, then it was Tsumeb that all the bloodshed was about.

Thanks to modern technology, we now know that Tsumeb is rich in copper, zinc, silver, lead, cadmium and germanium. From the time of its first exploitation, the Tsumeb mine has produced highly sought after metals, rare crystals and a long list of minerals, some of which are found nowhere else in the world.

Water pumped from the mine has been used throughout the ages to transform Tsumeb into a garden town, its fertile limestone soils supporting a rich variety of vegetation distinct from the surrounding scrubby veldt land.
