In the USA, each state sets its statutes for speed limits independently. In addition, some jurisdictions within those states may have their own laws regarding maximum speed in the absence of speed limit postings. In the eyes of the law, it is the driver's responsibility to know the laws of the jurisdiction in which he is driving. Max speed limits are usually determined by the type of street, and location/neighborhood (residential, school zone, state highway, etc.)
