It was first designed on paper by leonardo davinci. But the first actual prototype was built by orville and wilbur wright in dayton ohio and they first flew it in kitty hawk north carolina. Tht's why ohio auto registration plates say "birthplace of flight" and north carolina plates say "first in flight".
