By a rule of thumb, a third of the day(and  night) 's hours, i.e., 8 hours. All depends upon your life style, of course.

The recommended amount of sleep that the average person will need per night is around 8 hours, although it really does depend on your lifestyle and internal body clock. If you work shift patterns you may find your sleep is more erratic and that your body can survive on less sleep than others, although the more sleep you can get, the better.

The Sleep Foundation, www.sleepfoundation.org are an organisation which can give you some good advice about sleeping. If you are having difficulty remaining asleep (especially during hot weather) they have some great tips to follow - such as keeping your bedroom cool and dark at all times.

As our bodies age, we will find that we do not necessarily need as much sleep to function - which is why the elderly seem to always be up much earlier than everyone else. Teenagers also have the ability to stay up much later than adults, although they will need more sleep (such as a long lie-in) a couple of days later as a result.

Every person is different, but a good 8 hours is really a must for good physical and mental well being. I myself need 9 hrs tp feel ok, but I suffer from insomnia, so rarely do I get more than a few hrs.
