A fast and simple car checkup can increase its reliability on long drive and would also prevent cars from break down.
Tires:
To help prevent risky and problematic tire bust, look at tires for rough tread wear. Make certain that all tires; including the extra are filled with air properly.
Hoses, Belt and Fluids:
Off the engine and look for the damaged or broken belts and damaged hoses. Check antifreeze/coolant condition as well as level, making sure than 50/50 percent mixture of both coolant and water is there.
Motor Oil:
Inspect level and condition of motor oil. If driving under extreme situation like driving in very hot temperatures or pulling a heavy trailer, change to motor oil.
Breaks:
Before going on long ride check if breaks are working properly if not then ask mechanic to check the breaks.
Air Conditioning:
In summer's heat a car should have a properly working air conditioning system in order to cool the car. A skilled technician should be asked to do air conditioning service if required.
Emergency tool Kit:
Emergency tool kit should be present in the car because even well maintained cars can stop working; the tool kit should at least have following items: batteries, a flashlight, jumper cables, a cellular phone, a first-aid kit, caution tools such as flares or reflective triangles and so on.

You should give it a oil change and clean out the filters, if it's really long trip you'd better have a tune up before or after.
