After the persuasion of Thomas Paine to demand independence, the unified colonist force divided into segments, each of which had different stances about the American demand for independence. The first class was that of Loyalists, who still did not agree with the idea of Thomas Paine to demand independence from the British and instead felt loyal towards King George despite of the ill-treatment, which he had subjected the colonists to.

Most of them returned to England and Canada (which was under the control of the Britain government) but a large part of these loyalists stayed to fight for the British against the American colonists. Another segment of the colonists was referred to as the Patriots, who were clearly in favor of an American demand for independence, thinking of it as the most suitable solution to their problems. The last group was that of neutral colonists who were neither in favor or against the proposal of independence and therefore maintained an indifferent stance about the whole issue.
