The latest news on the political front regarding the restriction of media freedom in Pakistan was the challenge, which was given to the ordinace that was promulgated on the electronic media of the country some few days ago by the government. While the government of Pakistan paints the town red with its fortissimo claims of championing press and media freedom, the recent ordinance that puts restrictions on media rights proves to be a clear contradiction of its 'enlightened' stance.
Recently this ordinance was challenged by the head of the Human Rights Wing of the Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz Group) Barrister Zafarullah Khan in the Supreme Court of Pakistan, stating that the ordinance was unconstitutional and moreover it contributed towards spreading ignorance and curtailed the freedom of the media. It was a cheap attempt on part of the government on Pakistan to encumber civil liberties, which was nothing new as the government has done it before with the judiciary as well.
