Strom Thurmond was elected as a write in candidate into the United States of America senate. He was the only such person in the history of America to be elected in such a way. This was in the year 1954. A write in candidate is a person whose name is not mentioned in the voting ballot but the people can vote for him by writing his name on the ballot paper. No other person in the senate has been ever voted in this way apart from Strom Thurmond. He was elected from the state of South Carolina.

There have been many people in and out of United States of America that have been elected to various posts with the help of a write in. Ralph Nader was a write in candidate who was running for the President in the year 1992.
