Which Books By David Mamet Should I Read To Learn About Writing?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

If you want to learn about strong writing, then I would advise you to read any book written by Mamet, his arguments are strong and he remains provocative but wonderfully articulate, despite the bruising style.

If you want to learn about writing for film, there are two books that will help you particularly.  The first is Bambi vs. Godzilla, Mamet's latest work has some excellent sections on pragmatic advice for writers on this type of writing.  His work On Directing Film speaks about the art of directing film, but it also teaches a considerable amount on how to construct, or make a film in terms of writing.

In Mamet's work The Three Uses of the Knife, he speaks on a lot of subjects, but he specifically he talks about the art of playwrighting (although it could work for film writing).

His book 'Writing in Restaurants' is also a great work on the art of writing (as well as a lot of other things).
