I'm Trying To Bake A Cake But I Don't Have Vinegar. Is There A Substitution For Vinegar?

Answer Question

Well all I can tell you is we have been making home made cakes for generations and have never used vinegar for this. In fact my mom's pound cakes and fruit cakes were quite popular in the neighborhood and she never used vinegar as one of her ingredients. I have been making her recipe of pound cake and fruit cakes and have added some of my own specialties to the list such as cream layered cake and chocolate cake.

Cakes generally do not need vinegar; hut if yours does, try to substitute the same with some lime juice. It might taste better. The necessary ingredients for baking a cake are all purpose flour, sugar, eggs, baking powder, flavour, and cream or butter. For egg less cakes, more cream and cheese could be substituted.

For specialty cakes, there could be need for fruit preserves, nuts, chocolate powder etc. In some cheese cakes a little bit of lime juice could be used but not vinegar. Here is a typical recipe for a pound cake so go ahead and try.
    1) Two cups of all purpose flour
    2) Two TSP baking powder
    3) Two TSP flavor (vanilla extract or othes)
    4) 2 eggs,
    5) 1 cup cream or / cup butter
    6) 1 cup sugar

Mix all the above ingredients together and bake in the oven at 300'C for 30 minutes. Do a fork test to make sure it has been baked till the core. If no, leave it in that temperature for a few more minutes till done.

There is a "Crazy Cake" that calls for vinegar.
        3 cups flour
        2   " sugar
        5 Tbl. Cocoa
        2 tsp. Soda
Mix all dry ingred. And make a well in the center. Add:
        2 cups cool water
2/3 cup vegetable or salad oil
        1 tsp. Vanilla
2 Tbl. Vinegar [white or cider]
Mix together all at once, and pour into a 9x13 cake pan, or a 11x15 sheet pan, or, this makes wonderful cupcakes! My kids love'em without any icing! I like this recipe since I don't need to dirty anything but a bowl and a spoon!
Bake @ 350 for 30 min. [or less{20 min} if using the sheet pan or cupcakes]

I routinely substitute pickle juice vinegar (from sweet pickles) for white vinegar in this recipe. It's worked for decades ... adds just a bit of spice. There's also a microwave version available.
