Bas relief is a term that describes a method of sculpting in which the craftsman carve away the surface of a flat piece; sometimes it is a stone and sometimes metal.

The term has its origin in the Italian term 'basso rilievo' which says that a sculpture portrayed as a picture.

Bas relief is quite commonly used in architecture and it serves as an adornment for building surfaces whether in is inside or outside.

This kind of sculpture was in existence in almost all the civilisations; Egypt, Mesopotamia, Indus valley civilisation or the Chinese one. The world wide use of this technique can be found throughout the modern world and there are a number of museums where this art is on display and you can watch it.
