What Is A National Guard?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The National Guard basically was the title given during the time of the French Revolution to the militias created in every city, in replication of the National Guard formed in Paris.

Basically it was a military force separate from the usual army. After being formed it was commanded by Marquis de la Fayette and later for a short period by Marquis de Mandat, it was acknowledged after the year 1792 with the middle class and its support for legal dominion.

The National Guard had a strong impact on insurgency, but was eventually disarmed by Napoleon. Re-organized after his exile, it continued to play an important role in both the French revolutions of the 19th Century. A fresh National Guard was recognized in the year 1831 after the July revolution which took place in 1830.
