Why Does The Area Of Crystal Palace In London, Not Have A Palace There?
Answers
The area of London located between Upper Norwood, Penge and Sydenham is
known as Crystal Palace, because between 1854 and 1936 it was home to a phenomenal tourist attraction called Crystal Palace which was designed by Joseph Paxton.
It had originally been created in 1851 for the Great Exhibition and was located in Hyde Park, but moved to Upper Sydenham six months later.
The Crystal Palace housed exhibits, water fountains, gardens, terraces, animals, replica dinosaurs and put on circus events and magnificent firework and ballooning displays. The FA cup final was played at Crystal Palace until 1914.
Unfortunately the Palace suffered financial difficulties; following a fire in 1936 which saw most of the Palace destroyed, funds could not be found to rebuild the Palace.
War followed a few years later and the
site was used as a dumping ground for rubble.
The park still exists and the Victorian dinosaurs have recently been restored. The Italian terraces and a huge bust of Joseph Paxton also still remain.
