Our tides are caused by the gravitational pull of the moon. Every object on Earth is attracted to the moon, but most can't move easily so we only notice the effects on the Ocean. When it is low tide where you live there is high tide where someone else lives, because that point of the Earth is closer to the moon, so the water of the ocean is pulled there.
