The main reason why wedding favors are given out at a wedding is because you are thanking your guests for coming and sharing your special day with you. You usually receive gifts from your guests and so it is only fair that you should thank them properly.
The wedding favor tradition actually started in Italy and sweets were always given to symbolise health, happiness and fertility. However they only used to be given to female guests whereas now all of your wedding guests should receive a favor. It basically gives them a constant reminder of your wedding day and it is something that they can cherish for a long time to come.
Overall wedding favors do not have to cost the earth; they are just a way of showing your guests that you appreciate their support and that you thank them for coming.
