It is Mist and the top layer is called the thick litter layer the next layer is the thin humus layer and then rapid leaching until you reach the eventual parent rock.

It is nutrient rich and moist. But, when the rainforest is cut down it loses the nutrients quickly so even if you want to grow things on it afterwards it would be hard work! Keep the trees!
