Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Cnut of Denmark invaded England in 1013. He is also known as, "Canute the Great." He enforced Edmund II to separate England with him.

In 1015, he managed to capture nearly whole of England except for London. In 1016, he achieved an outstanding conquest at Ashingdon. It was at this time, that he divided England. He divided it into 4 districts, namely, Northumbria which was governed by his Norwegian brother-in-law, Earl Erik of Lade; Mercia by Eadric Streona, the English earl who had helped his incursion; East Anglia by the famous Viking chief Thorkell the Tall; and Wessex he governed himself. His supremacy proved steady, nonviolent, diplomatic and affluent. The power base that he urbanized in England, helped him chase claims in Norway and Denmark.

He passed away in the year 1035, November. However, after his death the lands were returned back to the original royal blood lines.
