Infra-red technology has gained popularity in recent years as a way to set up wireless lines between office PCs. As opposed to microwave and cellular technologies, which use radio waves, infra-red technology sends data as light rays. One system, for instance, places a device on each computer through which it can send and receive messages via a transmitter located on the office ceiling.
This setup provides an unobstructed, line of sight path to and from the computers. Recently, a beaming device has become available that hooks up with a PC card and cable to a laptop's infra-red port. The device beams print commands to a desktop computer's display screen, which wires the message to its attached laser printer. Nowadays, infra-red technology is becoming more popular in cellular phones and using this its also very easy to transfer data, graphics data from one cell to another without spending a single penny in transfer. The discovery of infra-red radiation is ascribed to William Herschel, the astronomer, in the early 19th century. Herschel published his results in 1800 before the UK Royal Society.
