Blanca is the Spanish version of the English and French feminine name Blanche, which is a French word meaning 'white'. The Italian variation of the same is Bianca.
The name grew in popularity till it was quite common during the last medieval centuries among the cultures of Western Europe. It seems that the name, which was possibly invented around that time, was given a boost up after King Garcia VI of Navarre with Marguerite de L'Aigle, his French-born wife, gave the name Blanca to one of their daughters.
Scores of their descendants, who quickly spread across royal families all over Western Europe, went on to name their daughters Blanche. History is dotted with a number of persons named either "Blanche" or "Blanca" besides the women of the Navarrese royal family such as Blanche of Namur, who was queen of Norway and Sweden and Blanca of France, who was the wife of Fernando, who was the eldest son born to Alfonso X of Castile.
